I don’t mean to downplay the seriousness of these attempts to dismantle academia with national security theater. I do think perhaps some of us are startled to see the deportation machine coming more aggressively to more privileged communities. Reminds me of post-9-11 abuses, NSEERS etc.

They cannot credibly say they are keeping communities safe. This is even more disincentive for victims to come forward to report crime, much less apply for immigration protections. And undermine the intent and purposes of the #ViolenceAgainstWomenAct and the #TraffickingVictimsProtectionAct.
ICE will no longer consider if "an alien is a victim of a crime...a positive discretionary factor" in determining whether to deport them, per new ICE memo leaked to me

This is what the government did with 120K+ Japanese Americans in 1942.

I know. I was there in those camps.

President Trump has rescinded former President Biden’s Executive Order which created a task force to reunite families deliberately separated at the border by Trump. As many as 1,000 families remain separated because of that policy.

PSA to New York commentators: Immigrants are subject to the exact same criminal-legal system as non-immigrants. Deportation is a whole ass extra thing.

We lost our homes, our businesses, and our livelihoods. It was a devastating time.

Today I hear echoes of that time in the plans of the Trump administration. They want to round up and deport millions of undocumented migrants and deploy the military and build detention camps to carry this out. /3

Under Trump, EPA scientists say they were pressured to make the new chemicals they were vetting seem safer than they really were. They were encouraged to delete evidence of harms, including cancer, from their reports. Sometimes, they say, managers deleted the info themselves.

EPA Scientists Said They Were Pressured to Downplay Harms From Chemicals. A Watchdog Found They Were Retaliated Against.
Three reports issued by the agency’s inspector general detailed personal attacks suffered by the scientists — including being called “stupid,” “piranhas” and “pot-stirrers” — and called on the EPA to take “appropriate corrective action” in response.

During Trump's first term, he denied a law enforcement grant to sanctuary cities (defunded the police) by conditioning the grants on the recipients promising to give ICE: 1) citizenship status data, 2) release dates, and 3) access to prisoners to arrest them. Now he may go beyond that one grant.

Trump’s team is preparing to go after sanctuary cities — pulling federal funding if they won’t comply with mass deportations.
