On the progressive side, where’s the nuance for people who want trans people to have rights and legal protections, but also believe sports categories should be female versus all others? I think it’s absurd for society to be focusing on the rare trans people participating in sports, but it’s also true that I believe XY people who went through puberty will have different body proportions that XX people can’t attain. It warrants keeping women’s sports separate. I also know that there aren’t any trans women setting world records, and I’m familiar with the argument that therefore it shouldn’t bother me. But I’m a woman, and I find it simply unfair to compete against someone with a physical sex chromosome advantage. Their inability to be world champions yet doesn’t mean it isn’t inherently unfair. Similarly, I don’t want a trans person who identifies as a woman but is XY and not on hormones getting their crimes lumped in with women crime statistics. Being a woman has some of us wanting a separation from attributes more commonly exhibited by men. Why is protecting female spaces seemingly at odds with progressively supporting trans rights? I don’t want men discriminated against, but that doesn’t mean I want men in women’s spaces.
