Today is National Banana Split Day in the U.S.!

Next time you dig into a banana split, remember: your brain is doing some serious decoding behind the scenes!

What you taste isn’t just about your tongue — taste + smell signals combine in the brain to create flavor.

🥔 Happy National Potato Day!

Whether it’s fries, chips, or roasted wedges, your brain turns simple ingredients into satisfying experiences. From the scent of browning starches to the hit of salt and fat your chemosensory system transforms simple spuds into
satisfying flavor.

🍺 It’s International Beer Day!

That first sip of beer? It’s chemoreception at work! Bitterness from hops activates receptors on your tongue, while aromatic compounds rise up the back of your throat to your nose, creating that full flavor experience your brain really notices.

Why do some smells instantly make us recoil?
AChemS member grad student Sarah Sniffen and PI Dan Wesson at University of Florida have uncovered how the brain learns to loathe odors — like the unforgettable stench of microwaved fish.

Flushed cheeks, racing hearts, nervous tummies - all the stuff of where emotion meets interoception (the feeling of what's happening in our bodies). Which brain region seems to be involved? You guessed it, Insula!

It's Day 5 of Insula week; let's talk about emotion & interoception. (A thread).
I suspect that someone is doing the right experiment to figure these mysterious neurons do - stay tuned!

And circle back tomorrow to hear about the Insula as the region of the brain where emotions and body feelings combine.

I’m loving the distraction provided by these wonderful conversations about insula this week. Looking forward to tomorrow’s post!
It's day 4 of Insula week! Let's talk about Von Economo neurons. They exist in the Insula of humans, not mice.

At one point they were thought to exist only in humans and great apes and thus suspected to have a very special function. Possibly consciousness! 🧵

Hi everyone, I’m a new asst prof at Ohio State; I work on neurobiological changes occurring in postnatal development in taste and feeding. I’ve been here for a while but am bad at posting and will continue to be bad at it. I’m devastated about the election result but glad to see you here.
