Good news.

Faculty expressing their concerns seems to be having effects.

If you are in academia, make sure your administration knows your views on the compact.

Our students are amazing! OSA, with the support of many groups, led a successful protest yesterday as part of the November 7 national day of action. More photos soon, but for now here’s coverage from the OSU Lantern and from Columbus Dispatch.

Yes, some people's legacies are complicated. For example, Watson. After all, though he was racist, don't forget his other traits. For example, he was also sexist. And also anti-semitic. And a data / idea thief. So let's not forget all the different facets.

I uploaded the classic Watson & Crick paper about DNA structure, and the Adviser had this to say about one of the greatest paper endings of the century:

In the wake of searing media stories and big blowback from alums (some of whom threatened to pull planned endowments), Indiana University reversed its decision to stop letting their students print news.

Local elections are happening this year all over the nation. Community, county, & state races have a significant impact on your day to day.
These elections often see low turnout. This is your chance to grab some friends and swing things in the better direction.

That “working class” is a transparently race and gender coded term tells you who pundits view as low and middle income workers and what type of work they believe “counts” among this group.

Reality: the working class is predominantly White women and racial minorities in the low wage service sector.

I’ve received some feedback this week about generally having a more “palatable” message—e.g., not naming Trump or calling out other orgs.

I need folks to understand something: I’m not trying to make a palatable message. I’m using the message of science to try to stop authoritarianism in America. 🧵

As a former insider at AAAS, I know about some of the good work AAAS does, but have been deeply disappointed in this organization for a number of reasons for years.

I was deeply concerned about giving Bhattacharya an honored platform to spew propaganda with no opportunity for questions.

You have power!

If you wouldn’t write a check to a university that signs Trump’s compact, why would you write a check to a scientific society that doesn’t stand up for science in the moment where it counts most?
