Not only is this a great line, it appears in a very good piece.
"Belief in the coming of artificial general intelligence (AGI) approaches messianic, driven higher by investment-seeking hypesters, heavy drug users, and millenarian true believers, all of whom can reference science fiction, but not necessarily get it."
The Third Algorithm
ChatGPT and other generative AI isn't about to create superintelligence, but even if what we see now is it, the impact is on the scale of Google search and algorithmic social media, except maybe worse

New — Institute of Museum and Library Sciences employees were allowed back in the building this morning to gather belongings after all being put on admin leave by DOGE yesterday. Supporters have gathered in front of the building and staffers inside have posted a visible sign that says "SOS IMLS."

I am working on a map of Carthaginian Spain this afternoon. The client sent along an exemplar map (always helpful), with instructions to: "Include all towns shown on map, with the exception of Sexi."

It's the fist time someone's said, "Make it look like that other map, but less Sexi."

It feels like no one should have to say this, and yet we are in a situation where it needs to be said, very loudly and clearly, before it’s too late to do anything about it: The United States is not a startup. If you run it like one, it will break.

Looks like I’ve got a new project — specifically, putting together a plan to continually contact all my elected officials and clearly communicate my feelings on *gestures vaguely* all this. Good thing I have a course release this semester…

Grading student papers — and discovering hallucinated quotes that are supposedly/cited from an article that is *all about how GenAI hallucinates quotes*. //Sigh//

This is Eclipse. He’s a 12ish-year-old bunny who loves to nap on our laps under blankets.

I’m running in an uncontested race tomorrow to continue to be a Library Commissioner. If you live in Grand Rapids, MI, feel free to vote for me, if you want. Thus ends my campaigning.

One of the perks of being an introvert is that even when people cancel meetings/events that I’m looking forward to, I still get the dopamine rush of “I can stay home in comfy clothes!”
