Terrific post, particularly on Farage/Reform but on much else besides. Do subscribe to the blog to make sure you keep up with what are always fascinating contributions.

A lot of the "backlash against globalisation" is occurring in countries like the US where it made some people poorer, the country as a whole wealthier, a wealthy elite obscenely rich, and which at every opportunity chose against policies that would redistribute those outcomes more fairly.

More than a bit 'ick' to say so, I know, but I think this is one of the best, and maybe one of the most important (in terms of the issues involved), of the 460+ posts I've written on this blog over the last 9.5 years.
The new global divide makes Brexit an anomaly. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog on the choices facing the UK, what they show about the realities of sovereignty, how they're already changing domestic politics, and what they mean for Brexit:

Fascinating!
Came across this marvellous 'history of carols' today, also contains a link to a timeline of carols with musical excerpts. Some of the origins and dates are quite surprising. www.cathedralmusictrust.org.uk/discover/a-h...

An unfortunately large part of what led to the riots is how hostility against people seeking asylum has become so normalised, including by governments. Not only has political rhetoric emboldened the actual far right, it has also led to a dismissal of the seriousness of the threat they pose. #r4today

Essential reading by @petergeoghegan.bsky.social on the prospect of Musk bankrolling the Reform Party.

As Peter has been arguing for years, Britain's electoral laws are decades out of date.

That has left our democracy wide open to plutocratic capture.

Thanks, BlueSky.
1/ We're experiencing a huge influx of users, and with that, a predictable uptick in harmful content posted to the network.

As a result, for some very high-severity policy areas like child safety, we recently made some short-term moderation choices to prioritize recall over precision.

Chris Grey, always keeping on top of the shifting politics of Brexit; this week the "beyond" includes the what-ifs of Trump.
Post-Brexit Britain’s Trump problem goes much deeper than trade tariffs. Latest post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog. The discussion of how the UK might respond to Trump's tariffs is already confused, and anyway misses the bigger challenge they betoken: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2024/11/post...

Excellent point🔽
And why is Farage able to wander about in a crowd of thousands of people but not able to meet his constituents for face-to-face meetings?
After a day in which a farmers protest was hijacked by the usual far right leeches, the most important question is… are Farage’s two henchmen being payed with with your taxes…?

From poet, journalist and broadcaster, Ian McMillan:
“Cold shut-down libraries
And no pools for swimmers;
Food banks and clothes banks
And queues for hot dinners.
Parks with no sand pits
And rusted up swings
These are a few of #austerity’s things.”

I’ve long believed if we counted children in poverty, and had the same level of media scrutiny on this as we did quarterly Migration stats, our society would be very different
