"The decline in success rates is absolutely not satisfactory, because it sometimes borders on a lottery”
Nature 17 October 2025
Well, an honest lottery would IMHO be far better. For the reasons outlined here:

Funding competition sabotages science - Impact of Social Sciences
Research funding competitions seem fair but are often flawed. Gerald Schweiger, Adrian G. Barnett and Stijn Conix argue lotteries may support better science.

Pretty mindblowing!
There are forces in #nature that are at work that we don't experience or aren't aware of, but that are essential parts of the lives and spectacular numbers of creatures. For example, this from Ranjiangshang Ran and colleagues @pnas.org

New paper alert! The EU Natura 2000 network encompasses populations of most vascular plant species in the region, but with a lot of spatial variation in representativity. The results provide guidance for for better coverage after the planned network expansion.

The new European Butterfly Red List is published today, with worrying findings. Over 1/4 (28%) of Europe’s 442 species are threatened with extinction or are close to being so. The situation is far worse for our 148 endemic species, 40% are now threatened or nearly so www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...

Nativeness cannot be binary, if is to make sense and be practically applicable at the scale of countries.
We propose a graduated definition, in which species native to neighbouring territories are considered "near-native"

A graduated nativeness definition for overcoming dilemmas and difficulties of vascular plant species
Nativeness is a concept central to biodiversity conservation and invasion biology, but there are several problems related to a classic binary nativeness definition. Dilemmas arise from the dynamic na...

"We show that unmanaged forests are the backbone of biodiversity conservation ... We conclude that to preserve forest biodiversity in Europe, we should increase the proportion of unmanaged forests and the amount of structures supporting biodiversity in extensively managed forests.
Just out in PNAS!

We used multi-taxon data to model virtual forest landscapes.

Forest withdrawn from timber harvesting are needed in a much higher share than they currently are in Europe, and extensive forests contribute less than expected to multi-taxon diversity.

Sweden and Finland have increased logging levels to such a point that their forests are now a net source of emissions.
Their Prime Ministers are asking to be exempt from EU #Climate target so that they keep going. Oh and they blame climate change.

In 2022, we published a study on *consumers*, i.e. animals and fungi that consume biomass produced by other organisms, e.g. plants.
Now, our paper has been cited in what claims to be a metaanalysis of "Consumer Satisfaction in Live Streaming E-commerce". Far out!
