This is correct, and is talked about in the book “The Frailty Myth”.

There is a history of men changing the rules of an entire competitive sport after a woman wins.. I’d have to go back and find it.
One thing I read that I think about a lot is that they didn't separate the genders to protect women, but rather to protect men from losing to women. I don't know how true that is, but I can see how boys would lose status if they "got beat by a girl."
