I’m going to try to post every book I read this year (in one thread) mainly so I can make myself feel like I’ve achieved something in 2025.

First: Arcadia by Lauren Groff.

A book of two halves: failed hippy utopia / near-future family drama.

This!
Last week Green Party MP Siân Berry released a full log of her first year of official meetings with campaigners and lobbyists, and is challenging all other MPs to do the same. The three other Green MPs are set to follow suit shortly.

Berry is particularly urging fossil-fuel Farage to release his...

The UK papers are very Faragey today. More anti immigrant scaremongering. 😒 Anything about the UK’s recent uptick in its economic forecast or how people in the UK are beginning to feel better off? Nope.

Timely reminder.
"On Tyranny" is a #1 NYT bestseller again. I wish the moment were different. But I’m glad the book is useful. And grateful for all the kind words about putting the 20 lessons to work.

🧵 NEW: Is Britain really a high tax country?

Our collective tax bill is at its highest share of GDP since the 1940s

But actually, the tax and NI paid by the average worker are at their lowest in decades.

What’s going on?

I asked my step dad if he’d heard of Chappell Roan. He said he thought he’d been there once… ‘lovely place in France’.

I decided to leave the conversation there. 🤣

I can’t remember where I read this, but it’s important:

Why is it that when people think about traveling to the past, they worry about doing something small that will drastically change the present, but no one in the present thinks that doing something small today can drastically change the future?

If some people are ‘undocumented’ and they’re working jobs and paying taxes, why don’t you, y’know, maybe give them some documents?

This is the take 👇👇👇
1. Trump and his Death Eaters cannot tolerate any rival power. Europe, when united, is a major trading and diplomatic bloc. They see Russia (much less of a threat to US hegemony) as an excellent instrument for breaking up Europe, by threat or by force.🧵

Here’s an example of when can be achieved with clear progressive policies. 👏👏👏

If politicians in the UK stand their ground instead of trying to please a handful of Red Wall voters (who will never vote for them anyway) things could be much better.

The NHS will play a big part, as seen at PMQs

But material will also focus on the Reform leader's past support for Liz Truss' mini-budget, as well as remarks about Russia's invasion of Ukraine, reports @tomscotson.bsky.social
