"What worked last time?" Dunno, half the team left.

"What mistakes should we avoid making?" Dunno, half the team left.

"Who maintains this system?" Dunno, it was like that when we got here and we're afraid to touch it.

And so on.
This is absolutely true. Roles, processes, software - even tooling within standardized software - is different everywhere.

It's one of several reasons I am heavily anti project-based hiring. Team continuity matters. Layoffs and hire-and-fire cycles destroy it, and projects suffer and languish.
just as an outsider with an interest in video game development, and coming from the film industry, it really feels like the game industry has no standardized workflow. every new project gets a bespoke production system with a lot of uncertainty about tasks, roles and who should be doing what

"I must not over scope. Scope is the game-killer. Scope is the creeping-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my scope. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see the production path. Where the excess scope has gone there will be nothing. Only the game will remain.”

Look, I'm not saying that your writing should be 100% motivated by spite.

But a little, like 10%, is really helpful for those days where all the other motivations aren't working.

Wish there was one of these for the UK, but this looks p legit
This is a great guide for what to expect in a (US-based) layoff; it gels with my experience. At this rate, it prob behooves all employed gamedevs read.

Most importantly:
❗❗DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING IN YOUR EXIT MEETING❗❗

It's often a tactic to get you to waive rights. You have power, don't sign it away
Surviving a layoff — what HR won't tell you
Everyone in the room during a layoff knows your rights better than you do — read on to ready yourself for any scenario.

If your company ends up in a position where it needs to lay off 25% of its workforce (spoilers: it doesn't), it also needs to lay off 100% of its c-suite for gross negligence.

Remote work has made employment more accessible than ever, and increased the number of disabled people with jobs.

Working from home can also cut the carbon footprint of employees in half.

Forcing people back to the office goes against workers' rights, disability justice, and climate justice.
