A reminder that ‘knowing’ is not binary, it's not an on/off thing. We move through stages; hearing, recognising, recalling, mastering, before knowledge becomes truly usable. This example of of children's different phrases of 'knowing' words from Beck, McKeown, and Kucan is so useful

We’ve now completed our final Year 7 reading test for our founding cohort.

In Sept 18% joined us 5 years below their reading age, now 1 child. Just 37% were at or above their reading age now 75%.

As schools move towards structured learning, it’s critical that they consider the scaffolds and adjustments that are needed to help all students achieve - and not fall back into the illusion that a single teacher should plan 30 different lessons for 30 kids.
