Philosophically, it feels like the desire to create a natural language interface can become a desire for users to not have to learn the tools they're operating.

If your ability to use a tool is mediated by some other "intelligence" which actually makes the decisions, I'm not sure that's empowerment

If the interface requires you to be so specific the input might as well be code, that may still be a win for accessibility. But I hope that approach doesn't get replaced by one which can't be prevented from potentially taking unintended actions no matter how correctly you instruct it.

The dream is for the "do what I mean" interface, not necessarily a natural language-based one. If the NL interface can't reliably do what it's instructed to (and only that) because it depends on randomness, that's not necessarily an improvement.

That might say a lot about the ultimate limitations of software as a technology, but optimistically it says more about the problems of developing it when organized by the profit-seeking class.
