If you cite a work, you're telling your reader that you've read it and verify that it says X. If you haven't read it, you're lying to your reader. Lying is bad. If you do it as a matter of practice, you're a liar. Liars cannot be trusted to convey knowledge.

This is the entire premise of our profession. You do due diligence. You take years to do the work. You *read the other works you are using*. We have been doing it for decades.
