This is such horseshit. There was no secret about who Trump was, how nuts he is, what he wanted, how dangerous he is. This is just blaming the media for the problem that the voters just didn’t care.

Or the laws of armed conflict. Or the Geneva conventions. You cannot kill people who have been rendered hors de combat in a military action.
Decent answer, but this is why CNN needs experts on the law of the sea on, instead of the usual political commentators. They could easily explain why this violates maritime rules.

There have been numerous articles written explaining exactly how these missile attacks are illegal in multiple ways, EVEN IF the boats are smuggling drugs.

Really looks like the United States is about to launch a regime change war against Venezuela with:

-No casus belli
-No authorization from Congress
-No allies or international support
-No plan for a post-Maduro Venezuela
-No preparation for any sort of stabilization or containment of the fallout

@radiofreetom.bsky.social, can you lead a crusade to get people to stop using the term “open borders” when discussing immigration policy during the Biden administration?

Once again, the main day of Tea Party protests had about 300,000 nationwide, but saw endless coverage.

The No Kings protests had about 7,000,000 nationwide, and many media outlets reacted with a yawn.

No Kings was nearly 25x as big as the Tea Party but the Tea Party got 25x the attention.
Ask yourself this: How would the New York Times have covered the protests if it had been seven million MAGA supporters flooding the streets? We don’t even have to guess: We know how they and other mainstream outlets covered the Tea Party protests during Obama’s first term.

The secret police in the former USSR and Germany did not hide their identities. (Sometimes the Gestapo even wore uniforms.) Their operations and their behavior - and what happened in their ministries - was secret.
It's their individual identities that are secret, not their conduct

I think this is right:
"We've slid into some form of authoritarianism," says Steven Levitsky, a professor of government at Harvard. "It is relatively mild compared to some others. It is certainly reversible, but we are no longer living in a liberal democracy."

We are not yet in a dictatorship. Trump and his claque are making a run at it. But if you want to keep a democracy, you have to actually remember that you still have one.
This thread illustrates imo why screaming that America is now a fascist dystopia doesn't really work because the terminally online people greatly underestimate how hard it is for the median voter who isn't plugged in 24/7 to wrap their heads around the idea that we are now in a dictatorship
Okay. Let me try this another way, and see if that works.

I was a boy with relatives in Greece during the time of the Colonels, a pretty scary military junta. Some would say it was fascist: Militarism, anti-communism, nostalgia, etc.

But no.

And in that sense, my concern isn’t that we’ve reach full-blown authoritarianism, but that we’re led by ideological fascists who are actively pushing in that direction.

I would argue that “fascism” is an ideology, not a measure of how authoritarian a regime actually is.
