Urutau O urutau é uma ave da ordem Nyctibiiformes da família Nyctibiidae. Conhecido também como mãe-da-lua, urutau-comum, urutágua, urutágo, Kúa-kúa e Uruvati (nomes indígenas - Mato Grosso). O nome urutau é tupi e significa “ave fantasma”. Há uma crendice na Amazônia de que as penas da cauda do urutau protegeriam a castidade. Por isso, a mãe varre debaixo das redes das meninas com uma vassoura confeccionada com estas penas. Nome Científico Seu nome científico significa: do (grego) nux = noite; e bios = vida; nuktibios = aquele que se alimenta na noite; e do (latim) griseus = acinzentado, cinza. ⇒ (Pássaro) cinza que se alimenta a noite. Editar Características O urutau possui uma adaptação única em aves, chamada de "olho mágico". São duas fendas na pálpebra superior, as quais permitem que fique imóvel por longos períodos, observando os arredores, mesmo de olhos fechados. Mede entre 33 e 38 centímetros de comprimento e pesam entre 145 e 202 gramas. (Cohn-Haft, 1999). Segundo Cleere (1998), o mãe-da-lua apresenta indivíduos com plumagens de colorações distintas, estas plumagens são conhecidas como fase cinza e fase marrom. My first time in the Atlantic Forest—Parque das Neblinas—in Brazil before heading to #COP30. I saw these incredible Tangará birds (wire-tailed manakins) in the midst of their mating dance. Apparently the male birds cooperate in a hierarchy of sorts to attract the female. Enjoy!

Several #macaw species were seen on our recent trip to #Brazil, but they were a bit shy. Not surprising since they've been historically hunted for their feathers & illegal pet trade. The #Pantanal, in western Brazil, is the last stronghold of the endangered #HyacinthMacaw seen here. 🪶🌿 #avesbrasil
