The page (picture 2) was in the first of four notebooks he had created in London on the question of species change. However, he did not explain what he was thinking in words, but in a fist-sized diagram: a line shoots out from an origin marked with the number ‘1’ and then forks several times. Prayer beads, or rosaries, are used in many religious traditions as aids for prayer and recitation. In this drawing by Hokusai, prayer beads are shown encircling the wrist of a Buddhist as he devotes himself to asceticisms near a waterfall. Buddhist practitioners use rosaries to count the repetitions of sacred texts and appeals. These rosaries are traditionally composed of 108 beads. Each bead represents a bonnō –a negative mental state such as jealousy or depression. Additionally, the number 108 holds astronomical significance as it is the product of the four phases of the moon and the twenty-seven constellations (4 x 27 = 108).

A legendary episode that took place in front of Aridōshi Shrine (in modern-day Osaka) provided the subject of this composition. One rainy night, the famous poet Ki no Tsurayuki (ca. 868–ca. 945) came to Aridōshi Shrine while making his way back to Kyoto. He had planned to stop and pray but changed his mind because of the inclement weather. His horse, however, suddenly collapsed at the shrine’s gateway. Tsurayuki took this as a sign that his neglectful attitude had offended the shrine deity. He quickly offered prayers and recited a poem dedicated to the deity. As he uttered the final syllable, his horse miraculously stood up, and Tsurayuki was able to proceed on his way.
