Is the massive market for gluten-free products contributing to a nocebo effect? Likely.

New study finds:
- "fermentable carbohydrates & nocebo effects [not gluten] contribute considerably to symptom generation"
- "commercial & media influences" seem significant

Even if the Republican controlled federal government had allowed the $6 billion contingency reserve to be used to fund SNAP benefits it wouldn’t have been enough to completely fund SNAP

Let that sink in, The Trump administration made a conscious choice to starve millions of Americans.
"For every meal that a food bank provides, the SNAP program provides nine. There's no way we can meet that gap. There's no way we can replace every single one of those meals. It is not sustainable for food banks to fill this gap. We were not built to do this."

One of the more gratifying things I get to in my job: share well-made photos of some of the abundant beauty in the world. 'The Colors of October' - 26 images showing foliage, flight, and festivity around the Northern Hemisphere at the peak of autumn. Gift link: www.theatlantic.com/photography/...

The FDA’s top vaccine official has resigned.

Dr. Peter Marks wrote this in his resignation letter about Robert Kennedy Jr.:

"It has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the Secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies.”

Today we're publishing a monster feature that dives deep into the initial six weeks over Elon Musk's government takeover. Our entire newsroom came together to help make this story happen. Read this culmination of our blood, sweat, and tears:
Inside Elon Musk’s ‘Digital Coup’
Musk’s loyalists at DOGE have infiltrated dozens of federal agencies, pushed out tens of thousands of workers, and siphoned millions of people’s most sensitive data. The next step: Unleash the AI.

Legal counsel representing federal employees is now being targeted by the Trump administration. Law firms are receiving a clear message that retaliation is possible for those advocating on behalf of individuals or groups opposing the administration’s agenda.

Two versions of a still life: The rich tones of the flowers in the color version add warmth, but the monochrome shot has a timeless, moody feel.

Which do you prefer? Does black and white enhance the drama, or do the colors bring out the emotion?

NOAA returns/produces so much more money to the American economy than it costs, no stories about any of this should allow them the absolutely bullshit "savings" framing

If DOGE is a federal agency, it can’t shield its records from the public.

If it’s not an agency, then its tens of millions of dollars in funding weren’t legally allocated and should be returned, some contend.
DOGE’s Millions: As Musk and Trump Gut Government, Their Ax-Cutting Agency Gets Cash Infusion
The Department of Government Efficiency is funded — and acts — like a federal agency. But the White House has shielded DOGE from the rules that govern such agencies, ProPublica found as it examines…

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

There’s beauty in simplicity. A bare-bones setup—ceramic, branches, light. No excess, no distractions. Just the raw, unfiltered poetry of shadow and form. It’s the kind of thing you’d find in a quiet back alley café in Kyoto.
