Facebook went from the place you posted drunk pics of yourself to where you got jealous of your friends vacations to where you called your uncle a racist to his face. Now people only go there to complain about “woke” Disney remakes & video game adaptations, or to demand more Snyderverse.

Indiana is at war with education. Gov. Braun has also discreetly eliminated the On My Way to Pre-K program & Child Care & Development Fund which many families, schools & daycare facilities rely on for kids to attend. All while making private school vouchers available to wealthy tax brackets.
Most incredible about this is that IU-Bloomington has long been the no. 1 university in the world for teaching Asian languages and cultures, with many programs found nowhere else.

They're slashing many of IU-B's most distinctive programs with zero thought or debate. They probably don't even know.
Bloodbath in Indiana higher ed as public colleges and universities ordered to eliminate 20% of all degree programs, apparently based purely on student demand (=enrollments) and not any rational calculation of need or value.

Even rewatching Twilight it’s kind of fascinating how off-kilter and sexually delirious their performances are. An objectively bad film, but at least they brought an ethos.
It's fascinating that two of our most fascinating actors got their start playing a couple, and also acting in Twilight

Season 2 is SO good.
I haven’t read the books. But I love the #WheelOfTime TV show so much. Absolutely love it. I just finished re-watching season two so everything is fresh. Softly, softly from the shadows…

A critique of the Administration, for sure, but also an implicit slam against Broglio and the USCCB for their weak response.
Wow. Pope Francis intervenes directly in the debate among US Catholics over VP Vance’s use of the “ordo amoris” to justify privileging fellow citizens over immigrants—and says the true ordo amoris is that of the Good Samaritan, i.e., “the love that builds a fraternity toward all, without exception.”

Whatever their rhetoric on immigration now, the US Bishops abandoned these people in their support of Trump. Plain and simple.
The first visual of the Trump presidency at the border; a sobbing woman in Ciudad Juárez stands outside the Paso Del Norte port of entry, clutching a pole as she weeps having learned that her 1:00PM appointment for a chance to seek asylum in the US has been cancelled. x.com/arelisrhdz/s...

As so often happens in the church, Opus Dei is so often being framed as some shadowy Templar holdover distracts from its very real status as an exploitative criminal enterprise.
The case against Opus Dei
Opus Dei presents itself as a group of devout Catholics who want to help others to live out their faith more deeply. But, writes author Gareth Gore, there's an insidious underbelly to the organization...

This appointment is a pretty strong commentary from Francis on the USCCB’s rightward drift. McElroy will undoubtedly be more forceful than the conference on immigration, but what really puts him at odds with many of his fellow bishops is his emphasis on radical inclusion of LGBTQ+ people.
In his press conference right now, McElroy singles out immigration as a point of likely dispute between himself and the incoming Trump admin.

Calls mass deportation, which Trump has promised, "incompatible with Catholic doctrine."

Hard to think up a more potent (and necessary) middle finger by Pope Francis to the US Bishops than appointing McElroy to DC right as Trump takes office. Give ‘em hell, Frank.
January 6, 2025 at 1:59 PM
Necessary but frustrating to see US Bishops speak out about immigrant rights now that Trump already won. They got their culture warrior, public education defunding king and can now comfortably take moral stances that won’t impact anything.

Almost everyone believes they’re acting out of “love” because people tend to conceive of themselves as good. The Gospel actually has a firm basis for a theological framework for love—empathy, self-giving, service to the poor and vulnerable—which is largely ignored (and spurned) in Christian circles.
Tim, your capital-L "Love" is doing a lot of work here.

Growing up evangelical, I was taught that the greatest form of Love was whatever you could do to keep someone from going to hell. Love like that is almost always "tough love," and sometimes outright abuse ("for your own good," of course)

This makes absolute intuitive sense. Most people have never met a trans person or even thought about them until someone told them to fear/hate their existence. Total vacuum of counter-messaging.
Talking face-to-face with people about why transphobia is wrong has remarkably persistent effects in reducing transphobia, as illustrated by Broockman and Kalla (2016)
