Day one of our final Mountain Leader training course of the year. Lots of navigation, plus some useful discussions about leadership and group management. We had time to delve into the symbiotic world of lichens too for a proper geek-out.

Scotland’s first new broch for 2000 years wins planning approval
The approval of the Caithness Broch Project’s plans represents a major milestone for their bid to build a “faithful replica” on a site near Latheron.

Ok. Did everyone get to see a temperature inversion today? Ours was from a brief dash up Little Mell Fell.

We tend to not feed the birds during the summer, but as we head into the colder months there are roving flocks of delinquent juvenile birds moving around looking for something to eat. So, I've just filled a couple of seed feeders. Within two minutes....

Doesn't take them long.

Well, that's another very successful day and night on the hill. We have a brand new Mountain Leader in our midst! A massive Congratulations to Ed for pulling it all together on his ML reassessment. A brilliant result.

Hardly any breeze on the hill today, but the lovely aspen (Populus tremula - the 'tremulous poplar' or 'trembling poplar') just couldn't stop itself from having a little shimmy!

Lovely colours on the hill this afternoon. Nice to see a few yellows still hanging on with the flowers - yellow saxifrage, ladies mantle and bog asphodel, but the pink of the roseroot leaves and the quaking shimmery-ness of the aspen stole the show!

A couple of places have become available on our Mountain Leader assessment courses this autumn. These courses were full, and it would be great to get them full again. Please let your ML trainee friends know.

Thanks.
