The Met Office say that its weather station near Aberdeen has had 16 days with no sun. It's the longest period of gloom ever recorded in the city.

Here's Balmedie Beach on better days, to help remind you of the that bright yellow disk in the sky thingy.

It's @walkhighlands.co.uk time! And in my latest column I'm taking a closer look at the weirdness that is Fata Morgana. I've only seen this bizarre mirage a couple of times, and this particular sighting was on 27th December on Carn na Drochaide. My brain hurts after writing it though! 😆
Fata Morgana: when Morgan le Fay comes out to play
At first it was subtle, barely enough to suggest anything was amiss - a long, flat-topped plateau in the distance, somewhere over towards Drumochter, and I was struggling to identify it. We do of c...

Have you seen the Fata Morgana this winter?
In his latest article, Ben Dolphin does a grand job explaining how this amazing mirage occurs.

Our latest new walk visits a series of sites and memorials dedicated to the Arctic Convoys which ferried vital supplies to Russia during World War 2, as well as one of the finest wild beaches in all Scotland. Added by request from locals.

The view from Meall a' Ghlas Leothaid yesterday - with the Trotternish ridge of Skye and the Isle of Lewis clearly seen on the horizon. As part of ongoing updates, we've redone our Bad na Sgalag circular route to include the ascent to this fine viewpoint.

Something to distract amongst the grim. Down the riverside in Inverness today, a crow joined me, right up beside me, staring intently. A few minutes later saw an otter demolishing a salmon under the footbridge unconcerned with the passers-by most of whom had no idea it was there, only metres away.

The view over Firemore beach from the road to Cove just now. Taking advantage of a brief weather window out west. Great view of the mountains from here - that's Sail Mhor and An Teallach in the pic, with the Fisherfields and Torridons out of shot to the right.

It's been an INSANE day! It has also been an EDO day.
EDO = Emergency Day Off 😆

Just back from a 25km, 9hr trudge from the door, in the kind of conditions you dream about for most of the year but know you're unlikely to get.

-13C first thing, -5C to finish, and didn't see a soul 😀

Simply perfect conditions on an extended walk around Loch an Eilein and Rothiemurchus Forest today. Very quiet - only saw two other people out at Loch an Eilein.

If you are heading for the hills (and can get there on the snowy roads!) be sure to always check the Scottish Avalanche Information Service. There's tons of unstable powder snow in many areas - always a good time to remember to be avalanche aware.
