USAID work saves lives. I've worked on USAID-funded projects and questioned their sustainability, yet have always believed that the work is positively impacting under-resourced communities and often trying to undo the harm that the U.S. has inflicted. This is literally killing people.
Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts.

Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

Just confirmed this with my source: They were told the entirety of cdc.gov is going down imminently and to backup what they need.

Was asked to interview for a western media outlet and they were like "and has the impeachment vote awakened the women into political consciousness" and I was like ??? Women have always been the FOREFRONT of protest in Korea: Yoo Gwan Soon, stroller-pushing mothers in 2008, Ewha Women's Uni in 2016??

bush is to shoe as yoon is to soju
This photo circulating this morning as Yoon spoke for the 1st time since declaring martial law, with a wholehearted defense of his actions. The ajusshi-throwing-soju-bottle photo existed, and someone photoshopped Yoon in. Pretty much captures the mood here right now. (Reposting w/correct caption)

I wrote a thread about the insurrection in South Korea, which received significant attention. However, with so much news pouring in and the situation changing by the minute, I decided to stop updating that thread. Instead, I am starting new threads on a few specific topics.

Just learned about a community map of bathrooms around Yeouido for protesters, created by Dr. Wansoo Im from Meharry Medical College. Separately, there's also a map for coffees pre-paid by citizens who want to support but can't attend the protests.

a thread: korean protesters bringing random flags--this started years ago to show that protesters were just normal citizens with various interests because they were accused of doing some sort of political agitation and now it has just become part of the protest culture and i love it

news has been on all day at my aunt's since we got into Seoul this morning. big ups and solidarity to everyone out there, kpop lightsticks and all.

buckling up for the slow trickle of votes from the boycotting National Assembly members. following @myhlee.bsky.social here for the latest!

ㅋㅋㅋ completely random but love this comedic relief courtesy of youth on #bikes who passed through the Yeouido protest traffic saying "beep beep, move over, Yoon Suk-yeol" 빵빵 🚴🏼‍♀️

it's a wild and historic time to be visiting family in Seoul right now.
Incredible moment: Half the chamber is now standing up, and the opposition parties are chanting the names of every conservative party member who is not in the chamber (which is everyone but one), demanding they return to vote on the impeachment bill.

digging through some quality content
Lee Jae-myung, Leader of South Korea's Democratic Party, live-streamed himself scaling the walls of the National Assembly to bypass military barricades so that he could vote to overturn the President's martial law.

following breaking news live? from reporters, experts, and random people in Seoul? on bluesky? WE'RE BACK, Y'ALL.
What just happened in South Korea:

At around 10:25 pm: South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in a televised announcement

Within hours, 190 lawmakers voted in parliament to block the move while martial law officials entered the building.

At 4:27 am: Yoon lifts martial law

whoop and it's over
Requests the cooperation of the National Assembly in matters of governance (his reason for martial law was ostensibly because the NA was thwarting his policies)

That's it. He was OUT OF THERE with his tail between his legs as soon as he said like, those five sentences.

I am here for live reporting from people at the scene by happenstance!
listen. I do not report on Korean politics. I'm out here because my (drunk) freelancer requests received a "can't do" so I just set off on my own. this is genuinely the most clumsy scene report possible. I really want to be honest about that.
Is an impeachment vote likely?

Given the urgency, I’m sharing it now. I didn’t expect events to escalate this quickly. #SouthKorea #Democracy
