Victor mirrors his mother in many ways! He really takes after her! His mistakes are her mistakes, and then he over corrects, making it worse! Nobody noticing this makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

The thing is that like in Victor's actions he Knows This but he doesn't have the vocabulary to express it, he doesn't have the approval to express it either, and because this is not explicit, because it is woven into our society... it's treated as if it's not in the book, when it is.

The idea that a boy watches a girl be treated as chattel and that fucks up his perspective on human beings forever is at once very feminist and also revoltingly anathema to the sort of "girlboss" types who insist on interpreting Shelley as one of their own.

I feel like the women are interpreted in Frankenstein so badly. Victor's childhood is a backdrop of fucked up things happening to women, absorbing it as normal and going crazy in the process, even if I dont overinterpret. bsky.app/profile/graa...
It's actually baffling in Frankenstein that what is going on with Caroline and Elizabeth -- that Caroline selected Elizabeth to be a miniature version of herself to marry her son, and that Alphonse is enabling this -- is never discussed.

I wasn't even in New York! I was in the Midwest in the 90s/2000s where infamously nothing ever happens!

I remember being like ten and it being explained that Israel was on one hand supposed to be a safe haven for Jews and on the other that people kept blowing up buses there and I wondered if they understood how crazypants that sounded to a kid in the diaspora. Now at 33 I see many actually don't.

I am not sure if you are serious but the image is a crop of Norman Rockwell's painting Freedom of Speech en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom... which has gained memetic symbolism for "stating a controversial/unpopular opinion"

why did he turn out like that, they say "well his dad was kind of cold" when there's *gestures wildly* ALL THAT GOING ON as the background radiation of his life, how he's being instructed how to treat people, and also how he is seeing people who are very important to him treated. Like, wow!

Like I get that to the casual reader these might be blink-and-you-miss-it paragraphs but this book has been dissected beyond undeath. Like somehow when people try to figure out what the hell is wrong with Victor,
