Remember those bad stories about microplastics in the body? Maybe not so fast. Turns out detecting them is tricky--it involves burning samples and examining the fumes--and researchers have often failed to account for big error sources, esp. that body fats, when burned, produce the same chemicals.
‘A bombshell’: doubt cast on discovery of microplastics throughout human body
Exclusive: Some scientists say many detections are most likely error, with one high-profile study called a ‘joke’

A few striking images that capture much of what has happened to US publishing in the last 30 years.
The Big Five US Trade Book Publishers
With all the imprints out there, it's sometimes difficult to know which imprint belongs to which of the big five publishers.

The DORS app was supposed to keep people safe while using drugs at home. But in 4 years, it has activated just 51 ambulances.

The app isn't used 41% of days.

Meanwhile, the AB govt is dismantling the option that works: supervised consumption. 1/

Few individuals have had such a colossal & deleterious impact on the cultural psyche as the recently-departed Erich von Däniken. While he was not alone in fusing aliens into our conception of the distant human past, he was perhaps the most successful & the most harmful in doing so.

The University Affiliated Child Care budget was about 300k a year, 0.0154 per cent of the operating budget.

The president of the University of Alberta has spent $190,403 in travel in ONE fiscal year.

Since taking office, the travel expense budget has doubled.

Many think winter cycling is extreme.

Mostly it’s just getting dressed.

15 km in −19°C → winter gear to corporate attire.

This is my system.

Don’t like rising property taxes? Consider:

- driving less/using transit more (to save our infrastructure)
- welcoming development in your mature neighbourhood (to add rate payers without building new infra)
- buying less from Amazon (they don’t pay taxes to us but use infra)
- going downtown

Just visited our nearby university library and was fascinated to learn from a librarian that it's true--students are bombarding them with requests for references that do not exist, the product of ChatGPT and its brethren. "It's a goddamned nuisance," she said. "They don't believe it's all made up."

I'm showing this image at the Sugarbowl in Dec. Old buildings are special places that should be treasured; especially communal ones like #theatres & churches. If you haven't noticed, the togetherness of the last century is dissipating.

Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win. We’ve still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little bit brighter.

Trump tries to build a fake wall of inevitability around everything he does.

Today, voters - literally from sea to shining sea - broke through all that, and this is just the beginning.

Around the world, authoritarianism is taking hold of once strong democracies. If we ignore the seeds being planted in our own legislature, it will be at our peril.
