There is a concerted campaign by religious extremists in Canada & abroad to misrepresent Canada's MAID (medical assistance in dying) law, & portray it as "killing the unwanted."
Fuck those people.
MAID is "death with dignity" & it removes the misery & suffering that accompany fatal diseases.

"motte... a person with a terminal illness who fears a painful and undignified death should be able to seek medical assistance and the company of his loved ones ...

But then there’s the bailey: what assisted suicide actually looks like in many of the countries that have adopted it."

Yes. In Canada, we allow people to access medical assistance in dying. It involves a series of vetting interviews and is not simply 'allowed' willy nilly. Many with terminal conditions like cancer are indeed accessing it, in order to exercise some control over their death.

I see a lot of scaremongering about Medical Assistance In Death in Canada and it's really annoying.
Because what happened was NOT that the government chose to legalize it; They lost a court case in the SCOC and so HAD to legalize it.

Ok, this starts a long time ago with Robert Latimer who was charged with killing his severely disabled 12 year old daughter (in Canada). This sparked the long debate about assisted death in Canada, now called MAID (medical assistance in dying). 1/

Who chooses medically assisted death?
When should people be legally permitted to seek medical assistance at the dying point? It is an important question that often causes strong emotions and intense debate. More and more states in the United States and countries around the world are beginning to legalize or expand the practice of death medical aid, also known as maids. Maids are defined as allowing a health care provider to prescribe a drug to a patient so that they can end their lives (this is sometimes mistaken for euthanasia, but the two are different.

That said, MAiD has ethical concerns, especially regarding disability & poverty. But comparing it to Trump’s policies, which target marginalized groups without their consent, is misleading. If you're against injustice, be consistent—call out all abuses. #EugenicsConcerns #HumanRights

Eugenics = state-driven efforts to “improve” a population by eliminating certain people.
MAiD = personal choice for those facing unbearable suffering.

Canada’s MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) program is not eugenics—it allows terminally ill or suffering individuals to choose assisted death, not forced sterilization or elimination of “undesirables.”

The correct argument is: there is a very good chance *you* will die a painful, drawn-out death, with no control over the time or manner of your departure, in the absence of medical assistance in dying.

TOP 10 CANADA VS USA DIFFERENCES:

#10. Canada has a MAID (Medical Assistance In Dying) program for terminally ill Canadians WISHING to have a DIGNIFIED DEATH. The US, on the other hand, has an UNDIGNIFIED President, leaving many Americans feeling ill & WISHING they were DEAD. See the difference?

CW: assisted dying

I found the New York Times Magazine piece on MAiD (medical assistance in dying) deeply triggering.

Why? Because as a disabled Canadian I’ve had it “suggested” to me when I was at one of my lowest points

I support dignity in death, but it must never be a substitute for care 🧵

Who are you to decide there’s only one God given exit & force people to endure intolerable suffering? Choice means choice: you can choose not to access Medical Assistance in Dying but you cannot selfishly insist no access is the only choice people have. You get to die your death not every death.

While I completely agree that medical assistance in dying #MAID for disabled people will be disproportionate due to other systemic factors…

I think it is too much to ask people to live, often in indescribable pain, for principle.

Advocate for life, but do not take away their death.

The terrifying part in Canada is MAIDS. Medical Assistance In Dying Services. I've seen more people use them here because it's too costly for the medical care they need to live, or struggling with depression so bad that death is preferred because there are ZERO supports.

In my lifetime in Canada.

1966, Medical Care Act ushered in universal healthcare

1988, abortion law declared unconstitutional

1999, death penalty completely abolished

2005, same sex marriage legalized

2016, medical assistance in dying legalized

2018, cannabis legalized

Change is possible.
