People want to believe that the GOP’s electoral success in red states is the result of dirty tricks and gerrymandering instead of the sincerely held beliefs of a majority of the population because a mechanical issue is easier to fix than wrestling with how to make people not believe what they do.

I represented vets as an attorney and 100% agree. The way Hegseth talks about war explains why he spent his post-service years working to weasel known war criminals hated by their fellow soldiers back into polite society. I work with Veterans. If I told them that they "killed people and broke things for a living" they would (rightfully) tell me to go to hell.
