afraid this trend will be a huge, unmendable scar to the public credibility of once respected (at least, in specialized contexts) institutions - the MIT slop paper, this shit here...

which I guess is, on a smaller scale, what the LLM hype is doing to the concept of "reality" in general culture

"INTERESTING TIMES WITH ROSS DOUTHAT" sounds like that mid-80s late night strip game show on a local European Tv station you watched as a teenager thinking "...bOoBs!!" and then you just felt sad
November 6, 2025 at 5:59 PM
mmm, this has that distinctive "a couple of very harsh calls later..." feeling
November 5, 2025 at 4:42 PM
no, you're mistaken, "good movie" is half way thru Phase XVII (soo *checks papers* somewhere around September 2034)

is this a "Producers" situation?
November 4, 2025 at 10:25 PM
ah, the classic "complaining about how dangerous {CURRENT_VERSION}G is while connected to {CURRENT_VERSION - 1}G" algo.

easy loop-breaking solution: leave the "G" out of next one (just call it "7F" or something)

"we're making small progress towards immortality" must be the tamest, lamest sci-fi plot I've ever read

if you can understand conversational italian, the first three seasons of classic TV series "Boris" are a longer (and probably way funnier :) practical explainer of this very concept - especially s3, in which the concept becomes more explicit and part of the actual plot

ah, thanks, that's interesting!
I probably was too dismissive after seeing the "no longer supported" table, still a bit disappointing but at least I can give it a go

but we must confront the sad reality that people who 85% of the time cannot summarize brief content upon reading it would look at this and think "55%?? that's amazing!"

my whole (micro)story with GrapheneOS:

my (still perfectly fine) Pixel 5 stopped getting updates from Google

"Fuck this! I'll install GrapheneOS! freedom at last!"

[goes on GrapheneOS website]

"we don't support phones that stopped receiving updates from Google"

[goes for coffee]

"we're developing PMT (perpetual motion technology), we're *so* close, I think just 3/4 more years, please give us billions"

"no, you cannot see it, it's not ready yet!"

"ok, here's a demo. yes, it stops after 6 seconds, but the technology is improving!"

"PMT is here to stay, get on board or die"
