He probably doesn't care about SNAP at all here, it's more that the SCOTUS challenging him--period--strips him of his power (read: his impunity and the SCOTUS's unwillingness to stop his authoritarianism). And boy howday does he not want that. It could be anything, but right now it's SNAP.

And as for this specific action of his, it's less about SNAP and more about exerting his power over the SCOTUS. This SCOTUS basically made him a king in all but name, and has bowed to his every whim, shredding the constitution in the process. If they find their spine-EVER? That's bad for him.

Trump also knows full well that if they're swing voters that swung towards him, he can just lie to them and blame the shutdown on the Democrats. "Oh, I'd love to feed you specifically (not those Blacks who steal YOUR SNAP benefits YOU'RE entitled to), but the Dems won't cave on that woke crap."

With these two facts in mind, Trump's logic makes sense, if you think of him not as a politician, but a glorified gangster: "give in to all my demands right now or I'll starve those filthy poors you care about. And if you don't cave, I'll tell them it's your fault and they'll vote for me."

And in that lens, it makes sense: the Democrats shut down the government because the GOP made demands that were fundamentally incompatible with anyone voting for Dems ever again if the Dems fold on them. The Dems are currently facing a reckoning from their party's progressive wing because they suck.

What Trump wants is for the Democrats to fold. To give them nothing in compromise. And while he doesn't give a fuck about poor people, Democrats do. And he knows that they do. So he's effectively holding everyone on SNAP hostage. Think of it less as politics and more as mobsters with hostages.

Well, what's gonna happen is them and theirs will be fine, and even if they aren't, what matters more to them is that "God" will exterminate their "enemies" with plagues. It's the same busted-ass logic and the same busted-ass people who treated AIDS like the 11th Plague.
