Few things are better than volunteering at Huntsman SportsFest. When things seem overwhelming, don't just "look for the helpers", BE A HELPER. End Cancer! Donation link can be found at hope.huntsmancancer.org/sportsfest25/ and watch for next year's event.

This captures the nail in the coffin for many relationships with people i used to admire.

To see people gleefully saying "those people" including citizens dont deserve due process made me see them, not as misguided, but wilfully fascist
BREAKING @prri.org poll.
My disturbing take: It’s virtually impossible to write a survey question about the treatment of immigrants that is too brutal for Republicans to support.
1) 8 in 10 Republicans support renditions of immigrants to foreign prisons without due process.

You're not failing. You're gathering data.

Too often we tie our self-worth to outcomes, especially in tech.

But the real growth comes from how we respond when things don’t work out.

The idiocy to believe:
1. Data gathering, analysis, rule-making, and enforcement have low to no value;
2. That manufacturing, mining, and refining are low-training fields into which these specialists can easily transfer.

Followed by the audacity to expose that ignorance by saying it out loud.
This “genius” genuinely believes that healthcare budget analysts can simply be reassigned to making toasters.

I am not at all interested in debating the finer points of the flood of executive actions signed today by the incoming president. Nor am I interested in debating the merit or folly of the last minute actions of the outgoing president. I have only one plea, and it is this...

My wife has been through this twice, with two different insurance companies. Both not only required the L/R ablations to be separate appointments, but required she retry previously failed cortisone shots. Burn the whole system to the ground!
This is just wild: “Insurance won’t pay [for pain-reducing ablation on] both the left and right sides of the back at one time. You have to make two appointments, because they feel you might have less pain after one side is done, and they don’t want to pay for two if they don’t have to.”
Luigi Mangione posted online about having spondylolisthesis, a spinal condition that can be extremely painful and debilitating. I talked to other people with the disorder about how hard it is to get proper treatment within the U.S. healthcare system:

Saddened by the passing of another great coach. Coach Carnesecca lead St. John's to the 1985 final four, one of the first I can remember from my teens.

I just learned about custom feeds. I've been trying to find some of the communities I'm missing from the bird site. Search by keyword at goodfeeds.co, then pin feeds you find interesting. Can help you find people to follow as well.

So glad I found the fountain pen nerd corner of Bluesky. It gives me hope that we'll eventually be able to recreate some of other communities we're abandoning as we walk away from the hell that is the bird site.
Follow up question: what is the one fountain pen you reach for before all others?

When believed to be good scholarship, books like Ballard's weaken society's CRUCIAL need to learn from history. I've warned against them for years - speculative fiction that insidiously preys on people's sincere faith & corrupts public historical literacy.

How long will it take before those who fawn over men who reek of false piety & toxic masculinity learn that it's never just "He said. She said."? Believe the first brave woman to speak up because it is almost always going to turn into "He said. She said, she said, she said, & yet another she said."!
