The work of these Sudanese farmer organizers is so critical bcs as they put it there is a parallel war happening of capitalists waiting to pounce on their land so this organizing is not only helping ppl cope with hunger and dependency on food aid but also helping ppl stay and retain their land.

Skálpeið is mentioned several times in the Saga of the Earls of Orkney and we find the place-name ‘Scapa’ applied to a number of places in Orkney: Scapa Flow and Scapa Bay in the sea, and on land at two farms (Upper and Nether Scapa), Scapa House, not to mention the modern Scapa Distillery near ...

In 1984 Matthew Parris, who was a Tory MP at the time, took part in a documentary to show that a person could live on £26.80 a week social security payment. It was a pretty miserable existence and only for a week. I was reminded of this when I listened to some of Orkney's elected councillors justifying voting for a 15% hike in council tax for islanders - comments such as, it is only a few more pounds.

Psst…wanna buy a tomb??

For the past few years a group of us have been working to bring one of #Orkney’s major heritage sites, the Neolithic Tomb of the Eagles, into community ownership.

Now we need your help to make the site safe and accessible. Please share widely and donate if you can! 🏺🧪
Tomb of the Eagles
The Tomb of the Eagles is one of Orkney's best-loved Neolithic sites. We aim to re-open and restore it as a community hub and tourist locale

The Tomb of Eagles: Can You Help Us?
The Crowdfunder goes live on March 1st for 6 weeks and ends  on 12th April. The QR code takes to where you can donate. The South Ronaldsay & Burray Development Trust is undertaking a unique project to purchase the Tomb of the Eagles as a community buyout which is a first in Scotland for a scheduled monument. This will secure the reopening of the site which has been closed for over four years as result initially of the pandemic and then the Simison family owning and running the site and visitor’s centre retiring.

It was 553 year ago today,
Orkney and Shetland came along to play.
They're both a really nice group of isles,
and they're guaranteed to raise a smile.
So may I introduce to you,
The act you've known for all these years...

etc
#OTD in 1472, Shetland and Orkney officially became a part of Scotland 💙

The islands, depicted here in Nicolas Sanson's 1665 map, had been annexed by the Kingdom of Norway in the 10th century 🏝️
