It's the time of year when I see articles telling folks to put pet fur out for bird nesting. The Cornell ornithology lab does not recommend this! Flea/tick treatments & shampoos can be toxic, long fur can entangle chicks, etc. There are much better alternatives: www.allaboutbirds.org/news/providi...

These extraordinary photos of the LA fires have been shared widely on social media, often without crediting the photographer.

These are all the work of Ethan Swope, an LA-based photojournalist working for AP.

Thank you to everyone checking in. I am safe, but no on in LA is okay this week. I imagine this is how NYC felt in March 2020: everything is apocalypse and it isn't safe to go outside

Yesterday one of my students taught me a couple of ways to sign “fossil” in ASL. The one on the right is evocative bc it’s the bone sign but buried. The one on the left is used more for plant fossils, apparently, and is meant to show an object on a slab. I love these!

hello new followers! I'm here to be scientific and silly and sometimes sad, not to urgently respond to notifications 😊

consequently: the rate at which I am keeping up with new followers significantly lags the Xodus rate of people finding me here! I look forward to engaging with you when I get there

kitty is back from the v-e-t to tell you VACCINES WORK - for all species!

Anti-vax claims aren't just dissuading parents against vaccines, but pet owners too. Stay up to date on your fur baby's rabies shot etc, and think about who they play with!

Hey

You know that one project?

That one you've wanted to write FOREVER except it's scary as hell & maybe you don't feel good
enough or brave enough or strong enough?

Spend 15 min on it today

Keep the dream alive

Even a pot on the back burner needs to occasionally be stirred

This is fascinating and I love it.

Next term I'm going to trial leaving it to each student to decide if they want participation points to be part of their grade.

I wrote a series of friendly intro articles about spatial autocorrelation back in 2019, and it's still the most read thing I've made to date. If hearing the word "autocorrelation" fills you with a cold dread - fear not! The basic idea is quick to learn

I believe in humanity in science and the need for data literacy, and put that first in my teaching and collabs. This is a feminist queer crip science space.
