Webdev by day, wannabe gamedev the rest of the time. Working on "Maze of Death", a game, where you die a lot. Mostly using #GameMaker, but a little bit of #Unity, too.

I had a nice idea for #LDJAM, but I won't be able to finish it in time. 😒 Too much other stuff to do yesterday, and today we're going to a crowd sing-along in #Cologne.

Basically, it's an arcade-style mining simulation that might have some potential. I'll keep it on the roster. #gamemaker #gamedev

My 3 favorite things at #gamescom2025:

1. Meeting Larry Kuperman from @nightdivestudios.bsky.social
2. Seeing "Star Trek™: Voyager® - Across the Unknown" 2 hours before it was announced (I'm so thrilled about this one!)
3. Talking with passionate indie devs about their games.

This whole week I attend #devcom / #gamescom as a freelance journalist for a local newspaper I write reviews for. But secretly also as a game developer trying to find new friends. You can say I'm the Batman of game development (not that rich though).

Just finished "Nice Day For Fishing" by @vivaladirtleague.bsky.social (had a review copy). What a nice game! It has small flaws, which are easily fixable and I saw at least 4 possible entry points for DLCs. Can't wait for hopefully more adventures in Skycraft! #nicedayforfishing.

First time I have a Reddit post with 1500+ upvotes. I think I open a social media agency next.

I should really overthink my backup strategy...

Uh, what happened? My #dungeoncrawler suddenly became colorful. I refactored and replaced the line drawing algorithm with sprites. From that it was an easy step to move to colored walls. Moved from early PC to a NES game. #gamemaker #gamedev #rpg

Here's a new screenshot for my #dungeoncrawler game. Interface is almost complete, character leveling and battles work, too (but need heavy balancing). This is almost a complete game now. Still no title yet. :( #gamemaker #rpg #gamedev #retro

Fixed the UI! We also have monsters now (and chests and keys). No fighting/interaction yet though. Next step is to improve the input. I want to play this on the Steam Deck, so I need to make it 100% playable with a gamepad. #gamedev #gamemaker #rpg #dungeoncrawler

My 80s style #dungeoncrawler game is growing faster than expected. I now have unlockable doors, a scrolling mini map and a message log at the bottom. The UI is still buggy. Now I need to study some older RPGs to get a better interface. #gamemaker #gamedev #rpg

Today I began to write the dungeon algorithm to my own retro RPG. I want it to be as retro as possible, so this is the style I chose (also it was very easy to do). Might change it later though. Next step is to fill the dungeon with items and monsters. #gamemaker #gamedev #rpg #screenshotsaturday

I did it! I released my first #Picotron game on the BBS. That was fun and easy, can't wait to make a fantasy MMORPG!!! #gamedev

Porting one of my early Ludum Dare games called "Superrealistic Parachute Simulator" to #Picotron to learn more about it. ChatGPT is surprisingly helpful with that. #gamedev

Oh no! I'm falling in love with #picotron! Bought it on release, never used it (like I did with #pico-8), but I really would like to do a classic Ultima like RPG. Still need some experimenting with the engine, though.

I wish I could commend whatever twisted brain came up with this scheme, but it's just too evil.

Today I deleted a big part of my game: an over world hub, where players could to improve their character. I thought this was necessary to improve the game experience. But in the end it just felt not right. #gamedev #gamemaker

"Maze Of Death" now has a user interface! This is a giant step into making it a real game!

Also I was struggling for quite some time now to make it more interesting for players. And I guess, I finally found some ways. Can't wait to implement them. #gamemaker #gamedev

"Maze Of Death" more and more becomes a real game. You need keys to open the door (so there's finally a goal) and shields help to survive. Spells, quests and perks are next.

If this looks boring, check this video of an earlier build: youtu.be/fFFpqRxxESk

It's incredible how bad #Google search results became. Nothing is as old as 10+ years old forum entries, especially when you search for tech stuff.

After taking a break from #gamedev for 3 weeks I joined a get together for indie developers in #Cologne, met many friendly people and showed my game. Today I implemented the first new feature since at least 2 months!

Go out and talk to people about your game!

This October I decided to:
- don't buy games for a year (which is not a problem with a lib of approx. 3.000 games on Steam, GOG, Amazon Prime, Epic 😅) (also emulation)
- switch to #Linux (which works fine)
- don't do #gamedev for a month (I might cancel this early though)

My #ldjam game so far. Not sure yet, where this leads to. Maybe an ✌antless runner✌. 😂
