FunFactFriday: Rare Earth elements (REE) are a group of 17 elements. Magnets use REEs such as neodymium & are used in medical tools such as MRI machines. REE permanent magnets are key to clean energy technology and are needed in wind turbines & electric cars. #RareEarths #CriticalMinerals

Fun fact: Indium is a soft metal that will make a high-pitched crackling sound when bent, which sounds a bit like wood burning on a log fire! It is caused by crystal twinning. #indium ‘s biggest producer, China, just announced export embargoes on this & 4 other materials. ➡️ www.futureismine.co.uk

⭐️Fun Fact Friday ⭐️ Tungsten is named after the Swedish word for “ heavy stone”. Dense & hard, it also has the highest melting point of any metal. Nearly 3 X hotter than lava! Tungsten is used in a wide variety of applications that benefit from these properties such as hardmetal tools & drill heads.

Our UG numbers are holding steady at Exeter/ Camborne School of Mines, but I know the overall picture is challenging.

Mining is booming. The graduates are walking into good jobs in the mining and geotechnical industries at the moment. Mining engineers are also in high demand.
