My article argues that:
1. A mass movement to defend language rights is needed to halt the destruction of global linguistic diversity.
Other approaches to confronting global language loss are not working, but we have reason to believe that a rights-based approach would.

Perhaps it was unfair not to mention it is a wonderful (as usual) & *important* series. I apologise. My question reflects my own biases & fascination/horror at the way so many brutal implements used in Ireland were used again elsewhere. 🙏 for doing so much courageous work to ‘decolonise the mind’

In his essay, republished in The Guardian, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o explains the roots of language oppression, beginning with Ireland, concluding:
‘Education policies [& I might add law & its enforcement] should be devised on the basis that all languages are treasuries of history, beauty & possibility.’

Citizens already face AI harms: discrimination, privacy-violations, psychological and environmental harms. Instead of effectively addressing these harms and stopping companies from exploiting workers and stealing creative work, the President is promoting AI hype that serves these companies.
