The German Meteorological and Physical Societies didn't publish this warning lightly.

I'm actually dumbfounded by how little media attention it received. Especially when compared to much less substantiated forecasts on ~2.7°C by 2100.

We discussed it in detail here:

Many people think about cold in Northern Europe if the Atlantic Ocean current system #AMOC fails. But that wouldn’t be the only problem for Europe by far.
This new study shows that severe drought is another one. 🌊
📢 New paper on the impacts of AMOC collapse on European hydroclimate. 🌊

We find an AMOC collapse would exacerbate drought conditions across Europe, linked to reduced precipitation. In combination with climate change droughts are expected to become more frequent and severe.

Abstract. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is expected to weaken or even collapse under anthropogenic climate change. Given the importance of the AMOC in the present-day climate,...

Climate tipping points are close: scientists urge radical action before it’s too late

Tipping point risks are interconnected. Most interactions among them are destabilising, meaning that tipping one system into disaster makes tipping another more likely.

Climate tipping points are close: scientists urge radical action before it’s too late
Dangerous climate tipping points will threaten food, water and coastlines. They’re irreversible and only radically accelerated climate action can stop them now.

Worried about shutdown of the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC? The collapse of the subpolar gyre is a likely step on the way to that and could happen a lot sooner. Not quite as bad as full AMOC shutdown, but could bring major impacts already in 10-20 years. Important study on the mechanism ⬇️!
📢 New paper out!

🌊 We discuss how well mechanisms of variability in the subpolar gyre are represented in climate models, finding that models that do this best are also the models in which abrupt shifts are found 😬.

It's a technical story, so here's a simple overview 🧵

Causal mechanisms of subpolar gyre variability in CMIP6 models
Abstract. The subpolar gyre is at risk of crossing a tipping point under future climate change associated with the collapse of deep convection. As such, tipping can have significant climate impacts; i...

I've been working on #climate issues for years, but every now and then I step back & think how unbelievable (and sad) it is that scientists have shown for decades we're literally changing — in a bad way — the climate of the entire planet and yet society refuses to deal with that existential threat.
