there's a moment in PARADISE LOST where Satan arrives in Eden and realizes Hell isn't a place; it's a thing he carries within him and it'll follow him wherever he goes. and i think about that when i see these awful rich men whose monstrous wealth has enriched them not at all

He seems to have decided that he is just going to be silent, but I am increasingly interested in what David Cameron makes of the current Conservative Party
Conservative Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp repeatedly refusing to say that he thinks Reform MP Sarah Pochin saying she doesn't like seeing black people on TV was racist.

Says he wouldn't use her "language" but it's right for her to express "legitimate concerns" about migration

Going to be fun when US History review courses at universities get to include both the secession of the South on the claim of defending “States Rights” in the c19th, then the very same states defending that principle for 120 years only to give up when a convicted criminal asked them to
Pritzker is also furious: “Should National Governors Association leadership choose to remain silent, Illinois will have no choice but to withdraw from the organization.”

Obviously Farage would reach for a mid-20th century example here (the example that in fact led to the introduction of more stringent medical regulation), but also a bad example in the US context because the FDA actually prevented Thalidomide being sold in the US over safety concerns!
Farage asked on @lbc.co.uk whether he agreed with on the unproven link between paracetamol and autism

“I have no idea... We were told thalidomide was a v safe drug and it isn’t. who knows. I don’t know, you don’t know…when it comes to science I don’t side with anybody. It’s never settled.”

Really think we don’t talk about how Andrew Wakefield has caused so much damage as a result of his fraudulent “research”, and the fact that he is somehow not in prison to this day for the damage that continues to this day as people spout this nonsense about MMR vaccines
Trump: "The MMR I think should be taken separately. This is based on what I feel."

A leader outside Parliament with fairly limited hope of getting in before a General Election, a pretty clear ideological divide between the party’s four MPs, no whipping system. What could possibly go wrong?

Disgraceful that Sky (who, frankly, have been stoking exactly this sort of thing all summer) chose to blur the faces of the women involved. If that’s how they behave then everyone should see exactly who they are and they should be made social pariahs.
Sickening footage from Nuneaton tonight, where a Sky News interview with a local businessman was disrupted by racists hurling abuse.

Another local said, "Warwickshire Council Council has gone to Reform... It's given certain people a licence to be aggressive and racist."

I wonder if the OP can read all of those in the original… I’ve read a translation of the Inferno, but I’m not sure that means I can legitimately say I’ve *read* Dante…

Fascinating watching all the people who were student politicos/journalists when I was at uni, and who said that only the Tories offered sensible government, now rapidly dissembling to the support for Farage that they wanted all along…

It’s mad, and worrying for long term sustainability of good governance, that removing a handout to pensioners who have been the largest beneficiaries of government decisions for the last three decades is seen as this great an issue.
🎂 It’s the anniversary of Labour’s election win. The Government had some early stumbles, but what do the public think is their biggest mistake? Asked to say in their own words, it’s one of the most stark word clouds we’ve seen. Winter Fuel Allowance drowns everything else out.

Always fascinated by how Birbalsingh has the time to do this much media whilst also running a school… Though then maybe it’s telling she describes herself as Britain’s “Strictest” head as opposed to “Best”…
There may come a day when the BBC puts on air one of the other 29,999 headteachers currently estimated to be working in UK schools, but that day is not today

I know that Bluesky has taken off as the timeline is blessed with some quality Lambie. Not sure it’s peak stuff given no mention of Tassie, pubs, or an inadvertent segue into accidental racism, but the hands over the eyes through the majority of the video is top drawer stuff

Pure PR from Seb Coe, who is currently campaigning to subject DSD athletes to swab tests if he becomes IOC President - and who *in the same statement* bends the knee to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, where women are famously treated fairly and equally to men

I think by this point I’d basically accepted we’d be cancelling our flights to Japan in September, but was still blithely optimistic about starting a master’s degree in October
I have this feeling that over the next few weeks I might like to note and mark what I was doing five years ago. Because it is big and real and still feels incredibly present in our lives.

I'll use the hashtag #fiveyearson which as far as I can tell is only used about Covid. Do mute if you need.

I’m sure The Atlantic will be fine if everyone starts referring to it as The Western English Channel now then?
Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico may be upsetting to some, writes @giladedelman.bsky.social, but “in a democracy, values are determined by majority rule, and they don’t shift in only one direction. They can shift back”:
‘The Gulf of America’ Is the Wrong Fight to Pick
The more that politicians mess around with place names, the more important it is to respond according to consistent principles.

It remains the case that banning trans athletes from elite sport is a complicated debate - but using the same umbrella to ban DSD athletes is both wrong and cruel. Can only hope that Coe doesn’t get the role as the head of the IOC
World Athletics said Mon. it plans to go back to mandatory sex testing for ALL women, ban all trans women and DSD athletes, and return to requiring cheek swabs, a version of chromosome testing discontinued in the 1990s for being unscientific, harmful & invasive. www.reuters.com/sports/athle...

World Athletics planning amendments to female eligibility guidelines
World Athletics has begun a consultation period for an updated set of regulations for transgender and difference of sex development (DSD) athletes, with a cheek swab test among a number of proposals being considered, the governing body said on Monday.
