Bonjour Bluesky! In both French and English! Cheers! 🍻

Anyone complaining about European rearmament as escalatory simply doesn’t understand Ru. Ru invades the unarmed and the neutral (Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine). It hasn’t dared invade a NATO member, no matter how small. If Ru does attack NATO, it will be because it perceives its members as unprepared.

Just think about this news next time you see footage on how Iran has "changed" since Masha Amini (2022). It hasn't. Same people in power, laws are the same, normal people do what they want, and justice is arbitrary.

Will just say: I don't know how Syrian Druze opinion breaks down, pro- or anti-Damascus, but "Druze factions" are not the same as Syrian Druze broadly.

Armed groups have distinct interests and should not be treated as representative of their ostensible civilian constituency. x.com/azelin/statu...

Baffled by how many “intellectuals” flood op-eds & media warning against regime change. Is “the devil you know” really better—when that devil has crushed lives for decades? At some point, fear of the unknown becomes less wisdom, more cowardice.

I don’t get the fear of regime change. The Islamic Republic was never acceptable — just tolerated. What’s the worst-case scenario? Persian nationalism isn’t ideal, but it allows more pragmatism than Islamism. After this week, who’d dare sprint toward nukes anyway?

It would be interesting to compare the cost of US operations in Yemen (with limited success) with the costs of the Ukrainian drone attacks that just wiped some russian strategic bombers, damage worth +2B$. Different paradigm I guess!

Just your friendly reminder that Jean Charest would have won yesterday elections, but he "wasn't conservative enough" for the Alberta base of the Conservative party. Good for them today to have stayed true to themselves, right?!

Scientology, which obtained its tax exemption by harassing the IRS with private investigators and targeting individual IRS agents with lawsuits, still retains its exemption despite a raft of easily provable criminal conduct.
BREAKING via CNN

The IRS is making plans to rescind the tax-exempt status of Harvard University which would be an extraordinary step of retaliation as the Trump administration seeks to turn up pressure on the university that has defied its demands to change its hiring and other practices.

Hot take: Just because you're good at math or code doesn't mean you're smarter than everyone else. In fact, a lot of quant/tech folks seriously lack judgment—and the wild part is, they don’t even realize it.

I feel so happy and lucky to be in a Canadian university. Wouldn't be surprised if we get more established candidates from US next time we open a position.
I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

Quebec ignores Canada. Ontario ignores Alberta. Albertans think the West thinks like them. Manitobans, who they ignore, know better. Just about every province is indifferent or hostile to their own biggest cities. And the wheels of this magnificent federation keep on turning.
