Contradiction-laden commentary on the intersections of left politics, community organizing, music and getting down, from Tacoma, WA writer, political candidate, and DJ Devin Rydel Kelly / Adlib.
Pic from "Sneakers," by far one of my favorite movies, and a criminally underrated ensemble project way ahead of it's time. Gonna have to give it another rinse soon (edit: I'm annoyed that his NYT Obit called Sneakers a "popcorn" movie, but he probably would have called it one, too)

10) Moments like this remind me of Mario Savio's legendary 1964 speech at Berkeley, where he makes it clear that real resistance is based on the combination of democracy, voice, solidarity and personal sacrifice. 7)The right literally revels in this, fully embracing the contradictions. They're trying to make us do the same. They want stochastic violence.

While truly terrifying, all of this also nakedly exposes the rot in the system. Most people crave something different, often with both empathy and outrage

6) The contradictions of speech and action under "liberal" Capitalism are always present if you know where to look, but they often operate at a more subtle level. It takes weeks like this to reveal how liberalism's slow creep into fascism can accelerate towards a gallop.

5) . It's doubly insulting that UC Berkeley was home to the legendary 1964 Free Speech Movement, an important precursor to so much of the 1960s and 70s new left.

4) Meanwhile, the US-backed, genocidal Zionist state rounded up hundreds of Palestinians in the West Bank, bombed several countries in one day, and murdered two dozen journalists in Yemen, all while UC-Berkely turned over the names of 160 supposedly "antisemitic" student and faculty to Trump.

3) Some of these very same people immediately called for the execution of his supposedly left, queer or brown assassin, then changed their tune upon realizing the killer was a white, Republican Groyper failson trying to foment hard right violence.

2) Charlie Kirk, a white nationalist who openly supported state and extrajudicial violence, is being lionized by conservatives and liberals alike as a free speech advocate after his murder.
