Everyone—whether in higher education or not—should read this clear-eyed assessment of the state of higher education in the US. As the author notes, to protect democracy, universities must be run democratically.
Sobering but a reflection of many convos I've had in the last year:

"I used to joke with colleagues that higher education is besieged on two fronts: by fascists on one side and neoliberals on the other. As we look ahead to a second Trump administration, these two threads appear ready to converge."
