The irony is that Musk's marauders are *actually* behaving the way Republicans have long falsely claimed career civil service behave.

This is a longstanding pattern on the right -- they insist they are The Real Victims of some imagined abuse, which then justifies in their mind their own acts of abuse because they're just pushing back, see?

This is, of course, illegal. 5 U.S.C. §2302(b)(3) prohibits coercing political activity (including voting and donating) of any person or taking adverse action against any civil service employee or applicant as a reprisal for the refusal of any person to engage in such political activity.

When Joseph McCarthy was wandering around wrecking people's lives, the State Department purged most of its experts on China, which meant most of its experts on east Asia other than Japan. This meant that the government was largely flying blind when deciding whether to get involved in Vietnam.
Nothing to worry about here, just a political purge of our national security apparatus that will replace long-serving experts with dimwitted bootlickers.

I'm sure our safety and security won't be impacted at all.

There's an incredibly strong connection between educational attainment and interpersonal trust.

Among people who have a graduate degree, 56% say that "people can generally be trusted."

Among those who went no further than high school, it's just 19%.
