In the early days of quantum chemistry, before we had computers to calculate the shapes of electron orbitals, one man invented a mechanical machine that simulated their shapes. My latest column for @chemistryworld.com

This wacky SCOTUS opinion could be used against teaching any kind of science, history, or critical reasoning more generally, which might pose "a very real threat of undermining" religious beliefs. Even if it doesn't actually, there's the threat!

I've seen folks talk about how "in four years" they'll be able to get back to their planned projects and I really don't think that's going to work out. People & projects losing funding now will not be able to hit pause and come back once funding is restored. Hard-won progress & capacity will be lost
I worry that not enough of a big deal is being made about how long-term the devastation of these budget cuts to our scientific and health agencies will be, beyond the absolute ruin they will cause in the acute period.

The champions of Free Speech are now forcing scientists to retract submitted publications until they can be checked for the appearance of “forbidden terms.”
BREAKING NEWS: CDC orders mass retraction and revision of submitted research across all science and medicine journals. Banned terms must be scrubbed.

Goes beyond MMWR +other CDC pubs. Applies to research already submitted to top medical journals.

Take a look.

1/n Some time ago my colleague, excellent cook, and friend Ivan told me: "Cacio e pepe is the recipe that I screw up more often. Let's make a project studying systematically the physics of that sauce".

Prepare to get cheesy, I'm glad to share the Cacio e paper preprint:

This will be about our fifteenth year running when we’ve either had (in a restaurant) or cooked duck rather than turkey for Thanksgiving. So much better.
I see so much stuff like this every year—and Thomas is very serious indeed about food—and it makes me feel so weird because I have a pretty simple turkey method and it rules and I love it and I feel like that makes me wrong, somehow. But it's good! I dunno!
I have done a bunch of different Thanksgivings, to varying success, and have reached only two firm conclusions: (1) turkey is bad (you probably have to do it anyways) and (2) course out dishes as they're ready, serving 1-3 at a time, rather than putting everything on the table/counter at once.

This week's NOVA is Decoding the Universe: Quantum. I am one of the talking heads!

I think physicists are going to struggle talking about quantum mechanics as long as we think of the quantum state - not our observational outcomes - as representing what is real.
