I've learned that "genuine effort" looks very different from person to person. Someone could be really trying and having a morbidly difficult time and aren't properly able to communicate that. Measuring everyone against some invisible bar is a quick way to make them give up out of feeling futility

This goes for everything btw. If you have someone who's been a general jerk start exhibiting better behavior, I would love it if we encouraged that instead of saying "you don't get a cookie for showing basic decency" like way to invalidate positive growth
