3/ THEN we are told that heaven’s choir sees this as glorious and proclaims it as good news for all people.

THEN the first ones to receive that good news are those at the very bottom of the social hierarchy.

That is as political a story as you’re going to get.

We are told before anything else, who is “in charge” and who appears to hold all the power.

Only THEN are we are told that God enters into this world, making a home among the very ones oppressed by the injustice of those in power.

4/ You can’t “keep Christ in Christmas” if you’re going to reject Christ’s politics.

A reminder to those who believe “Christmas shouldn’t be political”…the Gospel Christmas Eve begins not with Joseph, Mary, angels or shepherds but with Caesar Augustus and Quirinius the governor of Syria.

Christ wasn’t born into a vacuum but into a real political system affecting real people. /1

We are now celebrating the 13th anniversary of what will no doubt be the most lasting legacy of my ministry.

The 2012 creation of this Downton Abbey Christmas tree meme.

I guess it’s too late for copyright?

11/ Christ asks for nothing from us at Christmas, except to receive all that he’s come to give - himself .

And the greatest gift we have to offer anyone else is the same: ourselves.

Our time.
Our service.
Our empathy.
Our friendship.
Our gratitude to those who share themselves with us.

8/ And when I got to Bernie, he grasped my hand and said “I haven’t helped put a crèche together since my Sunday School days. And your homily…God making a home amongst the outcasts and the powerless…that meant. A lot. All my favourite carols! I’m so grateful.”

And I felt my own eyes welling up…

3/ I prayed a little prayer, asking Jesus to give me the grace of seeing some spark of light in the darkness of emotional numbness and physical exhaustion.

During the service, a man in a wheelchair was given the figure of Baby Jesus to place in the crèche as we sang “O Come All Ye Faithful”.

2/ Despite the annual stress and busyness of the season, I’ve always maintained a sense of the joy and anticipation of Christmas…but not this year.

And I wondered how I was going to get through not only the Retirement Home service but Lesson and Carols on Sunday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Woke up feeling very worn down. The “Christmas Crazy”, which often hits as soon as Advent begins, has stayed away until now. I would have just had a “work from home” day but I had the Christmas Eucharist at a retirement homes and I couldn’t disappoint them.

As I drove there I felt so depressed../1
