When your heart is breaking, find your Gratitude. And when your Spirit is weary, find your Empathy. And if you’re not sure where to find it, or have been confused by all the messages that conflate it with weakness, believe me when I tell you that it is actually our greatest strength and most accessible medicine. Empathy is what sprouts from the seed of Knowledge, which blooms into Love and fruits into the acts of nurturing upon which all that is good and beautiful turns. Knowledge is awareness of realities born of experience. It is not conjecture or opinion, but understanding from the conscious perception of Truth. These cups will be used during the Water Communion in a prayer ritual in solidarity with Palestine. We will join UUs across the country in this action, keeping in mind our interconnectedness with the two million Palestinians in Gaza who are denied potable water by Israel, a war crime that is enabled by the United States. Our siblings across the globe are dying of starvation, thirst, preventable disease, and weapons of war. Following the service, photos of the cups on the altar will be taken and then you may retrieve your cup. In addition, there are printed QR codes on the table at the back of the chapel where you can learn more, including actions you can take to make a difference. If you like, you may use your cup for coffee or tea during coffee hour and/or bring it home with you to display as a reminder of the Palestinian people with whom we stand. Cups, stickers, crayons, etc. will be available at church on Sept 7 from 10-10:30am for you to decorate prior to the service for anyone who needs them. In addition to our participation in this ritual of solidarity with the people of Palestine, we will donate this Sunday's collection to Gaza Soup Kitchen https://gazasoupkitchen.com/. Louisiana Freedom Fighters and the 1811 Uprising Worship Leader: Derron Cook Worship Associate: Henry Germain-McCarthy The largest revolt against slavery in U.S. history began on January 8, 1811 at a plantation along the Mississippi River near present-day LaPlace and proceeded toward New Orleans. Fueled by their desire for freedom and inspired by stories of the successful Haitian Revolution, a few hundred enslaved people, organized and led by a Haitian named Charles Deslondes, rose up against their enslavers. Armed mostly with machetes and some confiscated firearms, the rebels’ numbers increased as they burned down five plantations, sugar mills, and crops. A group of plantation owners joined forces with a government militia that suppressed the revolt on January 12. Those captured were killed by hanging or firing squad. To intimidate other enslaved people, their heads were cut off and hung on posts along a 60-mile stretch of the plantation road. Derron Cook, our Worship Leader, is an educator, union organizer, and racial justice activist. He is intimately involved in a community campaign to revive and disseminate the history and the motivating, contemporary lessons of the enslaved freedom fighters’ rebellion. He is the founder of the Revolt 1811 Museum and Galleries in St. John the Baptist Parish. Live-streaming has returned! Claiborne Avenue. They came to aggressively voice their feelings about abortion access during our sacred time. Our community responded with brilliant nonviolence and care. Sunday we plan to remember this moment, our response in the face of hate, and the transformation that followed.
