I’m off all Meta platforms now. I was never on FB or Messenger, I lasted five mins on Threads, and Insta ran second to LinkedIn (hibernated permanently) as an increasingly unhealthy comparison machine. X houses historical data of others that I still search, albeit less and less often.

I was in an urgent care clinic a few days back because my ears, nose and throat became Chernobylesque and a family or five came in dressed in their pyjamas. When you’re seriously unwell you couldn’t give a stuff what you look like.

“You’re doing an amazing job” isn’t always the best thing you can say to someone who is struggling. “Can I help out somehow?” is good. “Want me to bring over dinner on Tuesdays?” is even better.

I'm feeling a heightened appreciation for people who do so much behind-the-scenes caring. It can be practical tasks- like making life easier for others in families, communities, or work; or it can be about holding in mind what's going on for people.

This 'hidden' care holds so much together.

The first rule of establishment club is you don't talk about being part of the establishment and instead you use your comfortable and lucrative platform as a pundit, columnist, or other establishment commentator to denounce everyone else for being the establishment.

The creation of a machine in the image of a human is a strange kind of extrospective introspection. To fear what we create (or are capable of creating) is to fear ourselves (and what we’re capable of).

Fawning is a growing behavioural trend that seriously gets on my goat.

Other him: Less workplace fatalities.
Him: Fewer.
Other him: What?
Him: Fewer, not less.
Other him: Okay, sure. Fewer workplace fatalities.
Him: I knew what you meant, so …

Quiet person: Sorry to interrupt, but shouldn’t the goal be zero workplace fatalities?
