My column this week: on the 'infernal circle' in immigration policy and Labour's muddled and uncertain attempt to get out of it:
Labour needs a way out of the infernal circle of immigration policy
Politics today is about ‘open vs closed’, but the UK government’s approach risks appeasing no one

I appreciate I am a lily-livered pinko, but if the problem is pull factors attracting people to the UK, can we not, in some small way, make a positive of that?

What annoys me (a Starmer supporter) most about the first year or so of his premiership is that most of his government's problems could have been avoided (and more bandwidth devoted to some of their successes) by simply doing LESS.

Just listened to Dr Runswick of the BMA on Times Radio. Speaking as a member of a famously unpopular profession, I'd advise doctors to get better representation if they want to avoid that fate.

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

Glad that someone has finally taken responsibility for the appalling assault on democracy that was the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Slightly confused that it's the Director-General of the BBC, but what do I know?

Typed on a smartphone....
Year one: "We can work it out as an estimate"
Year two: "Oh, look, lots of people are dodging the system!"
Year three: "We need to fit mandatory trackers to every car in the country."
Year four plus: "Why shouldn't tracker data be used in evidence? What have people got to hide?"
I don’t think think “estimated road use” is right approach - at the least drivers should have the *option* of getting a black box fitted that just tracks their EVs usage, but come on, Mel, impersonate a serious politician!

Other than the impact on Kent, it is hard to think of a clear Brexit upside.

I mean, sure, this is where we're definitely at, what with recent Tory chancellors and PMs not resigning after *checks notes* crashing the economy, lying to the Queen, and losing a majority in an election called by that PM.
If Reeves increases income tax she will have to resign
Like Jim Callaghan in 1967, this chancellor will have to pay the political price for going back on her oft-repeated pledge

The tech oligarchs aren't concerned about tax; they're concerned about legislation restricting what they can take and use for free. The modern left should be more focused on controlling their behaviour than taxing their wealth. Make them spend the money.

Americans are arguing about whether you should call the licensed corner shop a bodega, a convenience store, or a 7-Eleven.
I will support any New York mayoral candidate who admits bodegas are just convenience stores and everywhere in the world has them

Good luck turning the party that ended free movement, and strenuously resisted its reintroduction for young people, into a party for young voters, Bill.
