This Super Bowl Sunday, I’d like to introduce you all to the magical curse bowls used in Upper Mesopotamia and Syria in late antiquity. Written in Mandaic (as here) or Syriac Aramaic, they trap demons who trespass on a household by sucking them in with spiraling spells to the center of the bowl.

Book request: does any one have access to Shmuel Ahituv's Echoes from the Past: Hebrew and Cognate Inscriptions from the Biblical Period? I'd love to get it for our students but I'm unsure if Carta even makes an ebook, and it's out of stock in print everywhere.

I am so sad to hear of the passing of Prof David Abulafia. Fondest memories of David and Anna from Cambridge, History Fac and Beth Shalom. He was a wonderful scholar and great historian. Condolences to his wife Anna Sapir Abulafia. May his memory be for a blessing.

Wowzers you need so much coffee and time to update Blackboard pages from scratch - we need to update content one by one with the Ultra platform update, no easy migration - to make it worse I've been on mat leave and research leave, and I have 1 week and I don't even know what I'm looking at guys 😅

Letting all our lights shine this month in our interfaith family with homemade latkes and homemade mince pies ... but this year's mince pies won't have apple! I have a good friend who is allergic to apple but they celebrate Christmas and hence this year's batch is apple-free. Mrs Beeton's recipe /

Kids, don't let your training dictate your entire teaching/research destiny. Industry/academy life stories, both humanities and sciences, are full of versions of "I trained as an archaeologist, but now I'm an art historian."/"I trained as a biologist, now I'm in chemistry." /

Time to check for dead links on my toolkit website! Very sad when a database (usually the university-hosted ones) goes defunct from lack of funding/maintenance. There should be some provision for archival capture and open source since it happens so often. Don't just let your beautiful database go!

Bring back the 90s: start with encyclopedias, boredom, & video tape. Mass hysterias were not weekly occurrences and few people had such extreme political opinions that "became their whole personality". Mass hysterias and fads were Beanie Beanies and boy/girl bands, not zombifying TikToks. Whazzup.
