I'm a scientist and chemist, a juggler and long distance cyclist... and a priest in the Church of England. I blog and microblog about cycling, faith, and the ministry I have here in Slaithwaite and Marsden (West Yorkshire, UK) - and I've recently discovered the joy of 35mm photography.

"Ultimately, we should be working towards a society where everyone can move around safely at any hour, and where dangerous men (yes, men) cannot pose a threat. Until that ideal is reached, well-lit routes and the simple act of cycling together remain valuable and practical measures"
Cycling after dark is part of everyday life here, but it still raises real concerns. This week I look at what helps people feel safe on those night-time rides – from lighting to travelling together.

Cycling safely after dark
We have entered the darker months again, and that inevitably makes cycling a little more precarious. Safety after sunset has two sides: being visible to others and feeling socially safe. As cyclists we cannot lock ourselves in, as one might in a car, so the environment matters all the more. Being visible is straightforward. A working front and rear light, together with the legally required reflectors, is usually enough.

Road collisions should not be viewed as inevitable. Today I pushed the Government to use the internationally recognised Safe System principles, grounded in harm reduction, as it develops a new road safety strategy.

I'm tired of the wasted money being spent by sensible people trying to keep up 'waves hand' all this AI nonsense. Smart folks (in their core competencies) who are struggling to keep up to date with 'waves hand' all this AI grift. i.e. CPD courses on AI ffs.

We've introduced a new label and associated blocklist: Intolerance. We have also depreciated the Dehumanizing Rhetoric and Discriminatory Language labels in favor of this one, which will capture a broader swath of behavior that users want out of their timelines.

Thing I found out today: if you're on Universal Credit (or other means-tested benefits) you can get into Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, or the Tower of London for £1 (and 50% off at one cafe per site too). Because poor people deserve days out too www.hrp.org.uk/one-pound-ti...

This isn't surprising, if only thanks to habit. If I unthinkingly jump in my car for every trip (as many do), new buses won't change that

As a Vicar I appear to be joyfully disappointing people one at a time... I feel it's the personal touch that counts.
