When life gets you down...

Striking Roman tombstone in the Grosvenor Museum, Chester, showing a mounted Roman soldier in chainmail trampling a native - who is clutching his shield 😞

An incredible collection of Roman tombstones on display here 👌

Chester's timber-framed buildings do not disappoint.

You just have to look up...

Absolutely brilliant lecture this evening by @mikeroyden.bsky.social at Holt Local History Society: "Poor Law and Workhouse with Particular Reference to Cheshire and Denbighshire" from the Tudor period to the establishment of the NHS in 1948. I learned tons, always the mark of a great talk 🎓

The summer excavation in Holt revealing further traces of the Roman settlement, plus the extremely rare example of an early Medieval longhouse in North East Wales, is featured in the December issue of Current Archaeology.

Map of Chester, 1653
Chester is the county town of #Cheshire & has been much researched. This wonderful map comes from "Fenwick's History of Chester" published in 1896. The Roman layout of the roads is still largely unchanged, many of the buildings survive, too. A great map!

One of the most popular displays at Nantwich Museum is the Cheese Room. It’s believed that by 1600 local people were making cheese, with production in Cheshire peaking around the start of the 20th century. The exhibit includes a cheese vat, a cheese press & other cheesemaking equipment.

The Victoria County History project's 'Big Red Books' are great sources for #LocalHistory and #OnePlaceStudies in England. Smaller books, 'shorts,' are produced too. VCH #Shropshire for example has published one on #Wem. More info in their graphic (below) and on their website: www.vchshropshire.org.
