We tell the story of Nantwich (Cheshire, UK) through the ages, including Roman salt making, the town's great fire in 1583, the Civil War (including the 1644 Battle of Nantwich), cheesemaking. Talks, guided walks, school visits and more. Admission FREE.
We’re proud of our Treasures collection. Some are currently on loan to the Museum of Liverpool's “Treasure: history unearthed” exhibition, bringing together artefacts at the British Museum and museums from Wales and the northwest of England. For more info go to www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/whatson

During the first phase of our "Wonders of Colour" events, Fabio Parmeggiani gave a superb talk about dyeing, "Chemistry to Dye For", with live chemistry demonstrations, thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. A video is now available on the Museum's YouTube channel at

New exhibition at the Museum: Lazy Afternoon in Cheshire, by Ela Levando, who was trained in Poland. Ela graduated from the State High School of Fine Arts in Łódź, and later studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University, Toruń. Free meet the artist event Sat 25 Oct 2-4pm

Our Wonders of Colour exhibition has now opened, bringing to life the colourful history and science of dyes, pigments, food, art, stained glass, a 17th century dye house, tanning, and more. Objects and stories from the town’s history illustrate the impact of technology over the years @rsc.org

We're looking forward to the next phase of our Wonders of Colour programme of events. The exhibition opens on 14th October, with children's workshops during half term, and a range of talks with a colour theme.

A great way to learn about a town's history is by going on walking tours and we run lots! Around the town centre, ancient streets, the River Weaver, historic pubs, plus special ones around events (e.g. the Battle of Nantwich re-enactment, the Food Festival). All popular with residents and visitors.

A recent addition to our collection, this almost larger than life suit of armour has somehow been accommodated in our main gallery's Civil War display. Look out for him when you're visiting - he's hard to miss!

We have an exhibition at present featuring VJ Day and the stories of local people at the time. A Reminiscence Book is available where visitors can record their (or those of their family members) memories of war time in our area.
The exhibition runs until Sat 11 Oct. Admission free.

It’s been an exciting time recently with fab events for our Wonders of Colour programme (supported by the @rsc.org). Engaging talks with chemistry demonstrations, a weaving/spinning/dyeing event & children's colour-themed workshops. Now we’re preparing for an exhibition and talks in the autumn!

A huge "thank you" to the South Cheshire & Borders Guild of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers, whose demos in Nantwich Town Square today were part of our "Wonders of Colour" series of events. People were fascinated by the demos and the group's displays of yarns and fibres coloured with natural dyes

We're proud of our little courtyard garden at the Museum. We're gearing up for our "Wonders of Colour" events - 2 new posters with information about the history of dyeing in #Nantwich and plants used for natural dyeing, plus labels with info about the plants we're growing @rsc.org

Our new exhibition “Ancient Villages - Seven Miles Round Nantwich”, was inspired by a notebook compiled by 19th century #Nantwich historian James Hall & features place names, churches, pubs, transport, zoos, people & quirky stories!
The notebook, loaned by the Cheshire Record Office, is on display

At Nantwich Museum we’re hard at work preparing for the first phase of our “Wonders of Colour” events and activities. We'll have fun-filled drop-in family workshops (all with a colour and dyeing theme) on Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout August, 10am-3pm

In one of our recently refurbished cabinets we have a wonderful collection of glass bottles of all shapes and sizes. Most were used in local shops such as chemists and grocers. The varying colours of the glass will be explored in our 'Wonders of Colour' exhibition at the Museum later in 2025.

Nantwich Museum will be taking part in the this year's Festival of Archaeology, organised by the Council for British Archaeology. We're running 2 special tours around Nantwich, especially for the festival: a new geology based walk (23 July) and a Medieval tour (30 July). Get in touch for more info!

A great day in Nantwich Town Square yesterday making salt from brine. Huge thanks to volunteers from Middlewich Heritage, Nantwich Museum, and Reverend Mark Hart, St. Mary's Church, Nantwich, performed the "Blessing of the Brine", an Ascension Day tradition. Thanks to everyone who dropped by

We're excited about our new display featuring the Dabbers and the history of Nantwich Football Club! The Club was founded in 1884 and their long history is represented by team photos, football kit, and all kinds of memorabilia. A must-see exhibit!
