I’m starting to think that it’s important to generally push back against anthropomorphism with regards to LLMs. There’s way too much of this: “it understands”, “it likes”, “it hallucinates”, “it knows”. This is confusing/dangerous for people who don’t know how LLMs work.

A lot of good programming thought and practice in this book, even if you’re not interested in Clojure. There are a few parentheses though.

The world all of us Americans have lived in is one where—despite our griping & not awesome moments & political narratives—the United States has been an engine of innovation, prosperity, security, human progress

But if you take out enough screws, it will lurch to a halt & not be easy to resurrect /1

The people at CodeScene are doing a great job of finding quantitative measurements to demonstrate what a lot of us have been saying for a long time - code quality matters. You can't sustain frequent releases without it. codescene.com/blog/benchma...

Great news, everyone! This year's "State of CIDER" survey is out! (see docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...)

Please, take the time to share how you're using CIDER, so we can make it even better!

I'd appreciate it if you shared the survey around, so we can get as much input as possible!

This is what I’ve been talking about, trying to be thoughtful about when to be outraged. It’s going to be a very long and very dark four years. Sometimes letting republicans fight with each other is going to be the only way.

Software development thought: one of the many reasons we are so often wrong when trying to guess how to it will take to complete a task.

When making an estimate, there is an unknown aspect. How will we in fact solve the problem we are asked to solve?

The unknown part is our focus at that point.

How to deal with Trump:

Don’t swing at every pitch.

The modern “until you see the whites of their eyes”.
The goal is to not swing at every pitch that Trump throws out. As Steve Bannon once explained to Michael Lewis, “The Democrats don’t matter. The real opposition is the media. And the way to deal with them is to flood the zone with shit.”

We Need to Cover Donald Trump Differently This Time
Every outrage and insult can’t be a five-alarm fire, as it’s critical for the media to stay focused on the most serious threats to America’s democratic institutions.

Each of Trump's proposed appointments is a surprise. It is comforting to think that he is simply a vengeful old man, lashing out. This is unlikely. He and Musk and Putin have been talking for years. And the whole idea was that this time he had a plan.

Others have already said as much, but I’m going to say it for myself:

With Trump, this time focus on acts, not words.

(Gaetz and Gabbard are acts, not just words.)
